Community Information Network (CIN), communication wing of ACORAB celebrated its 9th Anniversary on the occasion of Republican Day i,e 15th Jestha, 2075 with the theme of “Volunteering Journalism” in Community Radio.
Honorable State Minister Gokul Prasad Baskota, Communication and Information Technology Ministry inaugurated the program addressing community radio’s role as a pillar in ending social malpractices as well CIN’s role in ending witchcraft, child marriage, women violence and other bad practices in the society and showed his interest in collaborating from government side to end such things, also focused in the importance of Republican Day without which we wouldn’t have been able to express our thoughts and views freely, the way we are expressing now. He also wished CIN to be voice of voiceless and assure the right to speak of community people.
Likewise, member of National Planning Commission, Mr. Min Bahadur Shahi, pointed that this is the correct time to amend communication policy and partnership with community radios. He assured that the Ministry of information and communication and the media sector of national planning commission is positive about the formation of media policy and ready to collaborate with ACORAB in future. Shahi told that 60% of the population deprived of right to information and praised the initiation of Buhari “daughter-in-law” Journalism of CIN has helped in mainstreaming the issues of daughters and daughter-in-law of the society by themselves. Shahi was also awarded during the ceremony for his contribution in capacitating community radios of Nepal.
Similarly, president of ACORAB, Mr. Subash Khatiwada, clarify that community radios are the only means which reaches the places and is being the voice of community when the society lack the access of development in rural part of the country. In recent day the problems faced in running community radios should be solved by the radio personnel. It is the proudest moment to be addressed the Community Radios as priority by community people despite facing many ups and downs to come so far. Community people has been positive towards the positive impact of community radios which added the responsibility and accountability of community radios towards community people. He stressed to address the diversity in territory and specialty of certain places for its conservation and share the ideas and skills to community radios.
At the moment, vice-president of ACORAB, Mr. Arjun Giri share the success of CIN establishment and stressed the importance of CIN to aware the rural part of Kathmandu since it is the center and need to include all the community within territory and make sure the role of CIN in centralizing the issue from all over the country and disseminate it.
Meanwhile, Treasurer of ACORAB, Mr. Laxman Khadka, said that community radios has been going throught the phase of opportunity and challenge, where we should utilize the opportunity for the betterment of society improvement.
Whereas, Mr. Nabin Karn, director of UNNATI Project from ILO focused the main role of CIN and community radios in information dissemination and societal transformation. As well as make sure to make the work friendly environment and provide the fundamental rights to journalist as per the law and policy.
Also, Mr. Bhumi Chapagain, coordinator of Administrative committee, suggested to differentiate the negative and positive aspect of issue to be addressed for societal transformation.
In conclusion, Browne Russel from Command Feedback Project, share her experience of rapid to and fro in the community to find the community issues in every two months. From the project working on natural disaster (Flood and Earthquake) to Buhari Journalism, she is happy to share the partnership with CIN/ACORAB.
Upendra Aryal, Equal Access, stressed in the content of program where the format may not be mandatory. We should address the issues easily and understandable by the community people as well as the ethics of the journalism shouldn’t be forgotten. He also praised the initiation of Buhari Journalism and other program of CIN which has been flagship program and addressed the issues of the society.
Whereas Mohan Chapagain, former president of ACORAB, focused on the quality of program rather than quantity and time consuming. She stressed in today’s generation people passion for listening has been reduced. So the radio program should be produced to capture the attention in certain time and the community radios should produce their own content focusing locality, its culture and languages rather than depending on CIN form program production and promote local governance as an opportunity for partnership.
As well as two Buhari journalist, Anita Chaudhary, from Lahan and Durga Balami, Radio Rubaru shared their experiences being a journalist for the first time without formal education on Journalism. As the women in terai has been hard life expressing themselves but this project has raised the awareness that women can express their thoughts and views. Both of them shared that they are happy to be part of the project where they were able to mainstream the issue of society (women body, women rights, women violence issues, issue of relationship between husband and wife, family planning and reproductive health).
