Ambassadors of Japan Masashi Ogawa visits ACORABCIN. On that occasion CIN took interview of His Excellencey ambassadors of Japan.
Your Excellency, welcome to CIN.
Thank you very much for inviting to your studio.
How have you been doing?
I am doing fine. Thank you.
What do you find the best aspects of Nepali culture and society?
I think Nepal is fascinating country in diversity, where more than 100 ethnic groups coexisting with different cultures and languages. Specially, Kathmandu Valley has been at the center of trade with India and Tibet from the old days, and still has the wonderful temples and palaces that were built by various dynasties in Nepal.
Japan is known as one of the fastest developed country, can you please share with our audiences what were the secrets of this development?
I think one of the main factor of Japan's rapid development is education. According to the statistics of the Japanese Ministry of Education, in 1917, almost 100 years ago, the school attendance rate in elementary school(both boys and girls were 99%). In 1925, the overall literacy rate of Japan had reached 98.3%. After World War-2, Japan recovered rapidly and achieved high economic development. The main contribution to this was the high quality of education.
You know Nepali society is least developed, in your opinion how could this country can progress very quickly?
As I already stated, I think, the most important things for socio-economic development of Nepal is to focus on education to bring up the talented young generation. From this point of view, the Japanese Government has been supporting to constructing primary schools in Nepal for over 20 years and supporting the educational improvement project being implemented by the Ministry of Education. It is also supporting human resources development through the JDS scholarship program( The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship) which accepts 20 highly capable Nepali government officials in Japanese universities every years and supports them to obtain Master's Degrees in their fields of specialization.
Japan is very good friends of Nepal and Nepali people. Japan has been providing unconditional support to Nepal and Nepali, can you please share us what are the major achievements made by this bilateral cooperation?
The Japanese Government supports Nepal in various fields. It focuses on three areas: poverty alleviation, democratization and peace building process, and infrastructure improvement for sustainable development.
One example of infrastructure improvement is the construction of the Kathmandu, Bhaktapur road and the Sindhuli road so called BP highway. After the completion of these projects, the traffic became smoother and the lifestyle of farmers along those highways has improved through easy access to the market to sell their agricultural products. Similarly, Kulekhani and the Kaligandaki hydropower plants are contribution to Nepal's power needs and the completion of Melamchi water supply plant can result in adequate drinking water to the people in Kathamandu. In the education sector, besides funding in Ministry of Education's School Sector Development Plan, Japan is also supporting school construction and providing technical advisors to the Ministry of Education.
In health sector, Japan supported the construction of Tribhuvan Universtity Teaching Hospital, Kanti Children's Hospital, and the National Tuberculosis Center.
In agriculture, Japan has been providing technical support to vegetable growing, production of value added agricultural products and rainbow trout fisheries through JICA. These activities have helped to increase the income of farmers.
The Japanese Government has also provided grant aid of USD 260 million for the reconstruction of a private houses, schools and public institutions that were damaged by the 2015 earthquake.
What could be the role of media to facilitate the development particularly in the country like Nepal?I think media has important role in providing correct and appropriate information to society quickly. Also, it has important role to shape public opinion for constructing democratic and impartial society. In my opinion, Nepal has freedom of expression and the media is also very capable. I expect that the media, including CIN, will contribute towards development in the coming days.
