Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB) Nepal and World Vision International Nepal have been in a strategic partnership to eliminate the child marriage in Nepal. To begin the mission, ACORAB with the technical support of WVIN and National Youth Council Nepal, a national level campaign was launched on August 10, 2017 with the title “It Takes Nepal to End Child Marriage” after 8 months long preparation. Right honorable President of Nepal Her Excellency Madam Bidhya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the campaign by lighting the lamp in Hotel Radisson. Minister of Law and Justice Honorable Yagya Bahadur Thapa, Minister of Women, Children and Social Welfare Honorable Asha Koirala, Chairperson of National Human Rights Honorable Mr. Anup Raj Sharma, Mr. Madhav Prasad Dhungel, Vice President of National Youth Council and Mr. Subash Khatiwada the Chairperson of ACORAB have joined Right Honorable President HE Bhandari in inaugural sessions along with other 300 participants. The main objective of the campaign inauguration was to understand and internalize the child marriages issue and create solidarity among the government, Media and civil society to end this problem from Nepal.
Three parallel thematic sessions were organized on the following issues i.e a) Laws, Policies and Practices relating to child marriage in Nepal, b) Role of youth to end child marriage and c) Role of media to end child marriage. These parallel sessions were facilitated by the group of the panelists. The panelists responded the queries of the participants. Finally, the Kathmandu declaration was achieved at the end of the program.
